Consultation for Schools

Caring for and educating young children in group settings is critically important work. Childcare centers and preschools have a significant impact on the developing child and face the challenge of meeting the needs of a diverse group of children with varying developmental and behavioral profiles.  Further, working with parents around the issues that emerge in the classroom can be challenging and time-consuming.

While the work is incredibly rewarding, it can also be quite stressful, especially in recent years—since the advent of COVID. Challenging behaviors in the classroom have escalated exponentially. Most teachers have observed children having a harder time with self-regulation and that many are behind in their self-help skills. There is also an overall lack of resilience. Teachers find themselves having to engage in more behavior support and management than playing and teaching their children.

That is why a significant amount of my time is spent providing consultation to schools; to partner with them to understand and address the root cause of the challenges in their classrooms, and to forge strong collaborations with parents that help schools have a much greater positive impact on their students.

Key Components of School Consultation

• Observations of children in the classroom (with consent from parents.)

• Guidance to teachers around concerns regarding children in their classroom

• Consultation with teachers around communicating effectively with parents about challenging issues.

• Facilitate meetings with parents and school staff to address identified concerns

• Refer parents and children to additional resources beyond the school when necessary

• Coordinate with outside specialists to ensure continuity of care

• Offer teacher trainings/workshops throughout the year

• Conduct parent workshops on the range of childrearing approaches and challenges
